If you have not yet linked PAN-Aadhaar this is the news for you

Have you linked your PAN card with aadhar? If not do it fast to avoid a double penalty from 1st July. Further, your PAN card may become inoperative if the same is not linked to aadhaar before the deadline of March 2023.

Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), circular vide F.No. 370142/14/22-TPL dated on 30th March 2022, states that “every person who has been allotted a PAN as on 1st July 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number is required to link PAN with AADHAAR on or before 31st March 2022”.CBDT has extended the above deadline for linking PAN-Aadhaar to March 31, 2023, subject to payment of a double penalty. The tax department had said that non-linking of PAN with Aadhaar by March 31 would attract a penalty of up to Rs1,000, but such PAN will remain functional for one more year till March 2023, for filing ITR, claiming refunds, and other I-T procedures.

“Every person who, in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (2) of section 139AA, is required to intimate his Aadhaar number to the prescribed authority in the prescribed form and manner, fails to do so by the date referred to in the said sub-section, shall, at the time of subsequent intimation of his Aadhaar number to the prescribed authority, be liable to pay, by way of fee, an amount equal to, — (a) five hundred rupees, in a case where such intimation is made within three months from the date referred to in sub-section (2) of section 139AA; and (b) one thousand rupees, in all other cases,” states CBDT latest order.

Fees to be paid by Challan No ITNS 280 with Major head 0021 (Income Tax Other than Companies) & Minor head 500 (Fee), according to a recent tweet on the Income Tax Department’s official Twitter account. Try to link after 4-5 working days from the payment date.”

The following categories are exempted from Aadhaar-PAN linking

  (i)  NRIs (ii)    Not a citizen of India (iii)  Persons whose age is more than 80 years as of the date (iv)    state of residence is ASSAM, MEGHALAYA or JAMMU & KASHMIR

You can link your PAN with Aadhaar by following the below process:

a) Open the Income Tax e-filing portal – https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/

b) Register on it (if not already done). Your PAN (Permanent Account Number) will be your user id.

c) Log in by entering the User ID, password, and date of birth.

d) A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. If not, go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.

e) Details such as name date of birth and gender will already be mentioned as per the PAN details.

f) Verify the PAN details on the screen with the ones mentioned on your Aadhaar. Before Linking Aadhar with PAN please ensure that all the details viz Name, Fathers Name & Date of Birth should be same. If there is a mismatch, you need to get the same corrected in either of the documents.

g) If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the “link now” button.

h) A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN
