Bank holidays in India are declared as public holidays under explanation to section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881. The holiday declared under NI Act is applicable exclusively to the banks located within the administration area of specific State and Union Territory.  In other States and Union territories where it is not a holiday, banks remain opened and allow normal banking transaction    similar to any other working days.

We have updated the names of the states that have declared holidays in gazettes or notified by IBA for the calendar year 2018. While preparing this list, some of the states/UTs have not yet published the list of holidays or not available to us for the year 2018 under NI Acts.  In such cases we have shown the dates of some important festivals of local importance as a general information.. We shall include the State’s/Union territory’s name as and when the specific state declares it as a public holiday under NI acts for 2018.

List of Bank Holidays and popular festivals of various states in India during 2018:

• If any of the holidays for the festivals of Muslim fraternity notified above does not fall on the date notified, the holiday date may be altered by the concerned government or the community fraternity in government service may be granted special  holidays on the date observable.

• All Sundays and 2nd & 4th Saturdays are Bank Holidays under the explanation to section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881.( Applicable to all commercial and co-operative banks operating  in entire India).

  Bank holiday for annual closing on April 1^st is applicable only for commercial banks including co-operative banks in India. All other offices will be opened  if it is  otherwise not a declared holiday/Sunday.
