Special Leave and extraordinary leave rules in Banks

Updated as per 12th BPS and 9th Joint Note dated March 8, 2024.

(Special leave may also be granted to the extent of 30 days in a financial year to the employees who participate in mountaineering expeditions. The sterilization operation for promoting small family norms by male/female staff members or wife’s tubectomy operation a staff will be allowed to avail of special casual leave. However, the period of leave on LOP under extraordinary leave shall not count for increments and the increment date will be postponed.)

A staff member of the bank irrespective of the cadre, who undergoes sterilization operation for promoting small family norms, will be allowed avail of special casual leave. Male Officers/employees/permanent part-time employees are eligible for 6 days of special casual leave for undergoing vasectomy operations. Woman officers/employees / permanent part-time employees are eligible for 14 days of special casual leave for undergoing a non-puerperal tubectomy operation. A male staff member is also eligible for 7 days of special leave in case his wife undergoes a tubectomy operation subject to certain rules and conditions.

Special Leave for participating in sports events/trekking programmes etc :

Special leave may also be granted to the extent of 30 days in a financial year to the employees who participate in mountaineering expeditions, provided the expedition has been approved by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, Ministry of Defence, New Delhi, or Youth Hostels Association of India. This leave is, however, non-cumulative, to be sanctioned by the Chief General Manager of the Circle. Leave may also be sanctioned for trekking expeditions/programs. However, such leave may be availed of only twice in the entire service of an employee.

Extra-ordinary Leave:

Extraordinary leave may be sanctioned (without wages) not exceeding 3 months on any occasion (and 4 months in extreme medical circumstances) and up to a maximum of 24 months during the entire period of service. EL can be combined with or in continuation of any kind of leave except CL. The employees will not be losing any seniority on account of extraordinary leave on medical grounds. However, the period of leave on LOP shall not count for increments and the increment date will be postponed.

Note: For calculating privilege leave, all types of leave availed (except casual leave and mandatory leave) will be included.
