Data communication: Components and modes of transmission

The term “Data Communication” comprises two words namely Data and Communication. Data can be any text, image, audio, video, or multimedia files. Communication is an act of sending or receiving data from one place to another or between two locations. Thus, data communication refers to the exchange of data between two or more networked or connected devices.

The key components of data communication include the sender, receiver, transmission medium, message, and protocol.

Devices like computers, mobile phones, printers, servers, and switches are connected to form the network which carries information from one end to the other end through a media to the network. These devices must be capable of sending and receiving data over a communication medium.

Data Communication

The key components of data communication include the sender, receiver, transmission medium, message, and protocol. The communication media is also called transmission media.

There are several components and modes of transmission, including:

The components of data communication include:

Message: The data to be communicated from one person to another, such as text, images, numbers, or video

Sender: The device that sends the data messages, such as a computer video camera or workstation.

Receiver: The device that receives the message, such as a computer, television, or workstation

Transmission medium/communication channel: Communication channels are the medium that connect two or more workstations. Workstations can be connected by either wired media or wireless media.

Network protocols (Set of rules): The rules that govern how data is transmitted between the sender and receiver

Transmission modes: How data is sent and received between devices in a communication system

Some other components of data communication include:

OSI model: A reference model for data communication that has seven layers, each defining a specific aspect of how network devices connect and communicate

Synchronous transmission: A method for sending large amounts of data where the clocks of the sender and receiver are synchronized.

TCP:  A protocol that ensures the reliability and stability of a network by providing a secure and reliable way to transmit data over computer networks.
