What is the meaning of ‘Core biometric information’ under the Aadhar Act 2016?

Core Bio-metric Information” is defined under clause 2(j) of Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 as biological attribute of an individual like fingerprint, Iris scan, or such other biological attribute as may be specified by regulations.

The “Aadhaar number” is a 12 digit identification number issued to an individual by the authority which includes any alternative virtual. The expressions “core bio-metric information”  and  “Aadhaar number”  shall have the same meanings as are respectively assigned to them in clauses (a) and (j) of section 2 of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016.

Banks including Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs)/ Regional Rural Banks (RRBs)/ Local Area Banks (LABs)/ All Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) /State and Central Co-operative Banks (StCBs / CCBs) and any other entity which has been licenced under Section 22 of Banking Regulation Act, 1949 are known as ‘Regulated  Entities’. Under provisions of Prevention of Money-Laundering Act, 2002 and the Prevention of Money-Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005, as amended from time to time by the Government of India, these Regulated Entities (RE) are required to follow certain customer identification procedures by authenticating the Officially Valid Document” (OVD) submitted by the customer, while undertaking a transaction either by establishing an account-based relationship or otherwise and monitor their transactions. When the customer submits his proof of possession of Aadhaar number as an Officially Valid Document (OVD), he may submit it in such form as are issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India.
