Special and Extraordinary Leave Provisions for Bank Employees

Leave entitlements in banks are designed to accommodate both professional and personal needs of employees, while ensuring continuity of service and compliance with HR policies. Among these, Special Leave* and Extraordinary Leave (EOL are two important categories offering flexibility under specific circumstances.

1. Special Leave

Special leave may be granted to bank employees for specific purposes such as medical operations, participation in sports or adventure programs, or family welfare initiatives.

(a) Special Casual Leave for Family Planning Operations

To promote small family norms, special casual leave is granted as follows:

* Male officers/employees/permanent part-time employees: Eligible for 6 days of special casual leave for undergoing a vasectomy operation.

* Female officers/employees/permanent part-time employees: Eligible for 14 days of special casual leave for undergoing a non-puerperal tubectomy operation.

* Male employees (whose spouse undergoes tubectomy): Eligible for 7 days of special casual leave, subject to prescribed rules and conditions.

(b) Special Leave for Mountaineering, Trekking, and Sports Activities

Employees participating in mountaineering expeditions approved by the *Indian Mountaineering Foundation (Ministry of Defence, New Delhi) or the *Youth Hostels Association of India may be granted up to 30 days of special leave in a financial year.

* This leave is non-cumulative and can be sanctioned by the Personnel Administration Department (PAD) of Central office of the Bank (Head Office) or Controlling Office/ Chief General Manager of the Circle etc.

* Leave for trekking programs may also be sanctioned, but it can be availed only twice during the entire service of an employee.

2. Extraordinary Leave (EOL)

Extraordinary leave is granted without pay when no other leave is admissible or when an employee specifically requests leave without wages.

* Maximum duration: Up to 3 months on any occasion, extendable to 4 months in extreme medical circumstances.

* Overall limit: Not exceeding 24 months during the entire service period.

* EOL can be combined with or taken in continuation of any type of leave, except casual leave (CL).

* Seniority protection: Employees do not lose seniority when EOL is granted on medical grounds.

* However, the period of EOL (loss of pay) will not count for increment, and the increment date will be postponed accordingly.

3. Privilege Leave Calculation

For the purpose of calculating Privilege Leave (PL), all types of leave availed — except Casual Leave (CL) and Mandatory Leave  — will be taken into account.
